Bay Area Moms’ Quick Guide to Buying a Used Jogging Stroller

One of the most common questions I hear before every Run Club season is: “Do I need a jogging stroller… and can I buy one used?”

The short answer? Yes — and yes.

Why a Jogging Stroller Matters for Longer Runs

"Can't I just use my regular walking stroller for running?” For short jogs or occasional bursts, like during Stroller Strides or Strides 360, many parents do — but for extended mileage, consistent running, or group runs, a true jogging stroller is strongly recommended.

Jogging strollers are designed specifically for speed, stability, and safety. Key differences include:

  • Larger, air-filled tires that absorb shock and roll smoothly over pavement, cracks, and uneven paths
  • A fixed or lockable front wheel, which helps the stroller track straight at higher speeds
  • Improved suspension systems that reduce impact for both parent and child
  • Stronger frames and better braking, especially important on hills and longer routes

Standard walking strollers are built for maneuverability at slow speeds — quick turns, errands, and strolls. When used for longer runs, they can feel harder to control, transmit more vibration, and fatigue your arms and shoulders faster.

If you’re planning to increase your mileage, join a run club, or run regularly with your little one, investing in a jogging stroller (even secondhand!) can make running feel safer, smoother, and far more enjoyable.

Your body will thank you — and your kiddo will have a comfier ride, too.

But They're So Expensive New...

A used jogging stroller can be a fantastic, budget-friendly option if you know what to look for. Here’s our quick guide to help you shop confidently on Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, or local buy/sell groups.

The Most Common Brands You’ll See Used

When browsing the used market, two brands pop up again and again — and for good reason:

BOB Jogging Strollers

  • Extremely common on resale sites

  • Durable and built to last

  • Typical used price: $250 or under

  • Great value for Run Club moms just getting started

BOB strollers hold up well over time, which means even older models can still be solid — as long as they have the key features listed below.

Thule Jogging Strollers

  • Lightest jogging stroller on the market

  • Tend to be priced higher, even used

  • Listings may start around $400, but $300 or less is a more realistic price to hold out for

  • Occasionally you’ll find a gem priced lower (especially if it just needs a good cleaning!)

💡 Pro tip: Don’t be scared off by dirt or cosmetic wear — wheels, brakes, and adjustability matter more than looks.

Key Features to Look For (This Part Matters!)

There are lots of jogging stroller models out there, but two features are non-negotiable for Run Club and everyday use:

1. Adjustable Handlebar Height

This is especially important if multiple caregivers will use the stroller or if you’re taller or shorter than average. An adjustable handlebar makes running and walking far more comfortable.

2. Adjustable Front Wheel (Swivel + Lock)

You want a stroller where the front wheel can switch between swivel and fixed:

  • Swivel mode = easier maneuvering for walks, errands, and everyday use

  • Fixed mode = safer and more stable for running

Some older jogging stroller models (often 10+ years old) only allow the front wheel to stay fixed. These can be hard to maneuver and frustrating for normal use — especially with turns or crowds.

If the listing doesn’t clearly show or mention this feature, ask before you buy.

A Note on Older Models

Older doesn’t always mean bad — but it does mean you should double-check:

  • Front wheel adjustability

  • Brake function

  • Smooth folding and unfolding

  • Cracks on the frame

If something feels off, out of alignment, or overly stiff when you test it, trust your gut and keep looking. There are lots of options out there.

What’s Worth Fixing vs. What’s a Dealbreaker

When shopping for a used jogging stroller, it helps to know what’s an easy fix — and what should make you walk away.

✅ Worth Fixing (Totally Normal for Used Strollers)

These are minor issues that are common, inexpensive, and usually easy to repair:

  • Flat or low tires - Inner tubes and tires are easy to replace (just like a bike!)

  • Worn tread - New tires can make an older stroller feel brand new

  • Needs cleaning - Fabric washes well; frames wipe down easily

  • Minor cosmetic wear -Scratches, faded fabric, or scuffs won’t affect performance

💡 These issues can often help you negotiate a better price.

🚩 Dealbreakers (Best to Keep Scrolling)

These issues can affect safety, comfort, or long-term usability:

  • Cracked or bent frame - Structural integrity matters — this is a hard no

  • Wheels that wobble or won’t track straight - Especially when the front wheel is locked

  • Broken or non-functioning brakes - Brakes should engage smoothly and hold firmly

  • Front wheel won’t lock securely (or unlock) - A must-have for running longer distances.

  • Handlebar not adjustable - Can cause poor running posture and discomfort

  • Missing key parts - Wheel, axle, or proprietary pieces that are hard to replace

5-Minute Inspection Checklist

Here’s a quick, no-stress inspection list you can save to your phone and use at a Marketplace meetup — designed for busy Bay Area mamas who want to decide fast and confidently.

1️⃣ First Look (30 seconds)

  • Frame looks straight (no cracks or bends)

  • All 3 wheels attached and seated properly

  • Nothing looks loose, rattly, or obviously broken

🚩 Walk away if the frame is cracked or visibly bent.

2️⃣ Wheels & Tires (1 minute)

  • Spin each wheel → should rotate smoothly

  • Front wheel is adjustable, locks AND unlocks

  • No extreme wobble when spun

  • Tires hold air (flat is okay — cracked rims are not)

💡 Flat tires = easy fix. Wobbly wheels = red flag.

3️⃣ Brake Test (30 seconds)

  • Engage the brake → stroller doesn’t roll when rocked

  • Release → rolls freely

4️⃣ Handlebar & Fit (1 minute)

  • Handlebar adjusts up and down easily

  • Feels comfortable at your height

  • No excessive flex or looseness when pushed

👟 If it feels awkward standing still, it’ll feel worse while running.

5️⃣ Fold & Unfold Test (1 minute)

  • Ask the seller to show you how it folds

  • You try folding and unfolding it yourself

  • Latches click securely when opened

  • Nothing sticks, jams, or requires force

🚩 If it won’t lock in place securely when folded or feels unstable when unfolded, pass.

6️⃣ Test Roll (1–2 minutes)

  • Push with the front wheel locked

  • Tracks straight, not pulling to one side

  • Try a light jog if space allows, should glide easily, even one-handed

💛 This matters more than cosmetic wear.

6️⃣ Quick Questions to Ask

  • “How old is the stroller?”

  • “Any prior repairs or issues I should know about?”

  • “Stored indoors or outdoors?”

Final Thoughts from Your Run Club Coach 💛

You do not need the newest or fanciest stroller to join Run Club. What you need is something safe, functional, and comfortable — for both you and your little one.

If you ever want help reviewing a listing, model, or price, I’m always happy to take a look and share my thoughts next time I see you in class.

You’ve got this — stroller miles and all.

Have you ever heard another mom say something like, “running saved my life” and wondered what she meant? She probably was referring to the amount of mental clarity she receives after a great movement session!

That's right, Mama... running helps you physically, but did you know that running can actually help you emotionally and mentally, too? Yes, the fabled “runner’s high” is real!

Studies have shown that cardio training—like running—helps moms of all ages and stages of motherhood reduce the risk of anxiety, depression, dementia, and insomnia. Exercise produces neurotransmitters such as epinephrine, serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine. These fun molecules influence your energy levels, thoughts, and emotions. In fact, norepinephrine is the chemical that helps moderate the brain's response to stress, helping you release some of the mental strain of mom life (yes, please!).

Additionally, studies show that running can help you improve overall brain performance—think decision-making, higher thinking, productivity, creativity, and learning.
